The formula for the volume of a cylinder is pi rxr (radius squared) x length . r= 1/2 4.125, p. is 3.1416, length is stroke = 3.75. It just so happens that 4.125 is very close to 4, so pi x diameter, is close to pi r squared. 4.125/2 squared x 3.1416 x 3.75= 50.11 inch cubed/ cylinder x 8 = 400.92 inch cubed.!! The math doesn't lie id you know how to do the math.
No, it's not. A lot of guys have been installing 350 cranks in the 400's to make them 383's. It revs faster with the smaller stroke. 400 blocks are getting kinda scarce these days.
what is the ci of a stock Chevy 400?is this not the way to find ci..
4.125 bore
x3.1416
x3.75 stroke
x 8
____________
388.773
I thought the stroke on the 400 was closer to 4, maybe a little more. The formula does look right.
Nope, I was wrong. I checked. It's 3.75 allright. The 383 is also a 400 crank in a 350 block. Sorry about the confusion.

so is the sb 400.. 388 ci?
Hey, the math doesn't lie. It sure looks like it is. Makes you wonder why they labeled it a 400.
here you go (.785 ) X (4.125) X (4.125) X (3.75) X ( 8 ) = 400.71
Now if you take the CID and go 400.71 X rpm say 5,500 for example and divide by 3456 you get CFM if VE is 100% ( CFM 637.71 ) if VE was 95% you would go X .95 and end up with 605.82 CFM at 5,500 RPM
4.125"
depending...180 to 220 stock
The stock bore was 4.125". The bore of a 406 would be 4.155"
The most obvious diff is 350 CUBIC inches is much small that 496 cubic inches. Also likely the 350 is a small block where as the 496 is a big block. The 496 will be a physically appearing bigger motor if that is the case. With great displacement also comes greater power or power potential. A mildly modified 350 can produce more power than a stock 496. Big Block Chev weighs in at around 675 Pounds and a 350 small block weighs in at about 575 pounds.
about 225 horse power depending on what has been done to the car stock cars have up to 800 hp same 350 cubic inch motor
how much horse power does a stock chevy 350 have ?
probably a 350 small block
The 350 is the small block, and in 1986 it would be GM corporate blue.
No. You would need to have the main journals turned down .200". Then it would fit.
To many variables to answer that one.
Factory stock, the 400 cu. in.
No the 350 small block will not bolt up to the 3.1L V6. The 3.1 is a 60 degree block V6 and the 350 is a 90 degree block.
