For me, it's not. How else will you know if the food is fresh; going bad; or appreciate the taste. Remember wine taster smell (or more or less sniff) wine first before drinking cause the aroma enhances the eventual taste.
Although some people may be offended if u smell their food. So my rule is: smell only your food, or when it's in the pot cooking or in their absence....
