Timing chains wear over time. They also stretch out and if allowed to go too long can "jump a tooth" and throw your motor out of time. They can also break. Check your vehicle manufacturer for recommended mileage to change your timing chain. If you do the job yourself make sure to use new tensioners and check the cam and crank gear teeth for wear.
