I have a similar issue with my 2007 Focus SE hatchback. I believe it is related to the brake-shift interlock. I have played around with the e-brake and letting the car roll back in park until the transmission's park pawl is engaged, etc. If the shifter button will release without your foot on the brake, the key will not release from the column either.
