to remove the key the vehicle not only needs to be in park but the switch which tells the ignition lock cylinder the vehicle is in park also needs to be engaged .I would start my sarch at the steering coloum and look at the swithc mechanism from the selector (either electrical or mechanical cable ) if this is not located properly then the key will not switch back enough to take out
