Typically the OEM engine oil viscosity.
Nissan's Hydraulic lifters for the SR20DE and SR20DET are usually recommended to be placed in 'engine oil' when the engine is undergoing rebuild, which in this case would be 7.5W30 (from factory) or approximately 10W40 depending on the viscosity you can find at your local store.
Tapping valves is a noise made by too much clearance between the valve lifter and the valve. Modern engines have hydraulic lifters. If you have too little oil pressure or run the engine low on oil, the lifters will make noise. The lifter can also wear out.
pump it full of motor oil with an old squirt oil can
That is the hydraulic lifter
That is one thec. question, That hardly anyone would care about as long as it loads up and stops clicking.
There could be several reasons why you have a noisy hydraulic valve lifter. One reason could be worn our parts in the entire valve train. A loose rocker arm could also cause noise.
Worn valve train? Hydraulic valve lifter worn or "hung-up"? Lack of lubrication to rocker arms?
Collapsed hydraulic valve lifter? Rocker arm (valves) need adjusting?
Take a pushrod and push down on the plunger in the lifter. A hydraulic lifter is spring loaded.
This sounds like a hydraulic valve lifter that is dirty, sticking and is not getting enough oil to lubricate the lifter. After the engine warms up and the oil pressure is stable, the lifter begins to get enough oil and quiets down. Try changing your oil and use a lighter weight oil like 10/W/30. After 2500 miles return to your former vescosity oil.
Depending on the vehicle, it most likely needs adjustment.
To physically determine if a hydraulic lifter is bad, you can perform a few checks. First, listen for abnormal engine noises like ticking or tapping, which may indicate a lifter not pumping up properly. Next, you can remove the valve cover and inspect the lifters for signs of wear or damage, such as scoring or excessive play. Additionally, checking for oil flow and pressure to the lifters during operation can help identify if they are functioning correctly.
Most probably a loose tappet. Check the valve clearances. Or a valve could be sticking in its guide. If the lifters are hydraulic (unlikely on older cars) they might be gummed up. A good flushing oil will clear sticking valve and lifter problems.
