i had to pull the instrument cluster out. it has female pins which mate with the male blocks on the wiring harness. I used a can of electrical contact cleaner and a toothbrush and sprayed and brushed all male and female connections. When reassembled it never went blank again. Prior to this all the cluster would shut down completely, this procedure fixed it

in my 98, i cleaned the connector a few times and the connection still wasn't permanent. so, i simply 'tweaked' the support that holds the vehicle side of the molex connector the gauge cluster plugs in to. by slightly bending the support out towards the steering wheel, you create a pressure that keeps the connector firmly connected to the gauge cluster. the issue never surfaced again.
