The Issue: A small red plastic gear in the speedometer is notorious for becoming brittle and losing a tooth, which immobilizes the odometer, but leaves the speedometer working just fine. The Solution: The folks at odometergears.com can mail you a new. more durable one that they mold themselves for $29, includiing postage. You can install it yourself, if you are willing to take the time. Getting the cluster out is covered in the Haynes manual. Illustrated Instructions for getting it apart and back together are at : http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...=Odometer+Gear (Part I)
and http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...rument+cluster (Part II) Alternative: Pay someone to install it. It will cost more than you think. Good luck
The logical problem - would be a broken speedo cable. The speedo & odometer are both run from the same cable.
If the speedo il ok but the odometer doesn't work, take it to a speedo shop as the problem is in the speedo.
The problem is inside the speedo and has to go to a speedo shop to be repaired.
Disconnecting the speed sensor stops the speedo and odometer. The odometer has to be changed by a certified speedo repair shop.
Hey Tony==Either manual or electric spedo if this happens the problem in in the speedo and needs to go to the speedo shop. GoodluckJoe
There is no such thing as an "odometer sensor." There is a vehicle speed sensor that is located on the output shaft housing of the transmission. That sends info to the speedometer. From there, the speedometer and the odometer are both operated internally, so if your speedo is working, but the odometer isn't, you have a problem inside the speedo head assembly.
If the speedo works and the odometer doesn't, it neeeds to go to the speedo shop as the problem is inside the spedo. GoodluckJoe
If the speedo stops also, it is the speed sensor. If just the odometer, take it to a speedo shop.
The gauge has failed.
There are two possible actions: 1) Replace the speedometer head assembly, because that is where your problem is. 2) Ignore the broken odometer and forget about it. The speedometer and odometer are one assembly. The same input that drives the speedo also drives the odometer, so you have a problem in the head itself.
If the speedo works and not the odometer, take it to the speedo shop as something is wrong in the speedo itself. You can't stop the odometer without stopping the speedo.
Replace the speedo head assembly. It is a sealed unit, with no servicable parts. If the speedometer is working, then the cable and the speedo drive gears are working. The failure must be inside of the speedo head assembly itself.
