I thought I had the same problem with my grand am, and it turned out that I needed to go to the dealer and have the transmission fluid flushed, and changed. It seem this is not someone a car owner can do unless they have a way to pick the front end up to let the ait out of it. I had to do it around 80,000 miles

I just had this problem with my 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. The problem is a short in the "multi-function switch." When I took it to get fixed, they told me that a lot of Pontiac Grand Ams have had this problem, and mine was fixed through warranty. The pass lock system has a problem. A lot of people replace fuel pumps thinking that its the problem when the security is the real culprit all along. It's off to the GM dealership as they need to repair the security system (probably lock cylinder & module) and then they have to reprogram the computer to accept the new parts. This is only dealer specific hardware/software that can do this. Approx. $400.00 - $600.00.
