Mustang for performance, but only if standard options were chosen. If fully equipped the Cougar had the same engine with the same power output but has a more luxurious interior and longer wheelbase. The exception is 1968, when the cougar could be outfitted with a Mercury 428, which featured improved oil and fuel pumps and a less restrictive exhaust, yielding about 20 HP (15 kw) more than the Ford 428 in the Mustang that year. in '69, they both got the improved version.

After 1971 it was not comparable to the Mustang, becoming more of a luxury car.
