They are usually mounted in the transmission and when told by the computer, they shift through the gears.....that's the short version answer.
low fluid level, faulty soleniods/shift valves/worn clutches....
It is locacted in the Transmission. You must remove the Transmission pan and you will see 5 or 6 soleniods. Solenoid A should have a white wire running to it.
Starter soleniods on Fords are known for problems. They are cheap, just replace it rather then watse time testing it.
In the boot under a floor cover. You will have 2 soleniods and the motor about centre at the rear of car (not boot)
