I have experienced 3 major symptoms on a truck of this vintage with a 4.6 engine with a failing O2 sensor.
1. loss of power, about 10 % loss;
2. engine is slightly noisier, used to purr, now noisier, sort of a growl.
3. noticably increased fuel consumption (15-20%) at lower speeds (in town).
Replacing the O2 sensor fixed all three symptoms . I made a fast trip, towing a
boat (about 3 hours), and I think this may have contributed to the O2 sensor failure. Symptoms occured after this, and sensor completely failed (check engine light) several months later.
