I have an 1998 A6 2.4. I was getting a lot of intermittent starting problems- especially when the engine was warm, i.e. after a cold start. The problem was a faulty Coolant sender. There was also a lot of corrosion in the connector to the coolant sender. It's a little fiddly to get at - you have to remove sthe flexible air intake hose and the housing for the air filter. The new sender was only £12 + vat.
