P0118 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates a problem with the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor circuit. This code is triggered when the engine control module (ECM) detects a high voltage reading from the ECT sensor, which can result from a faulty sensor, damaged wiring, or poor connections in the circuit. Additionally, issues such as a short circuit or open circuit in the wiring can also lead to this code being set. Addressing the underlying issue typically involves inspecting the sensor and its connections.
