What causes a 2001 mercury grand marquis to not run after getting gas it started drove went to leave it started then died and turns over but sputters and then dies?

I'd say you probably have a clogged fuel filter. UNLESS you drove it until it was completly empty which is very bad. Another thing that will cause it is water in the fuel. Watch where you buy fuel. Those cheaper stations are cheap for a reason! Go to an Auto Parts store and tell them what it is doing. They will give you the proper fuel treatment needed.
