I'm no expert (nor am I sure what kind of heater core you're talking about), but I have two suggestions:

1. It's poorly designed for the temperatures it's been operating at, and heated so much it broke (due to expansion).

2. It cooled too quickly after being hot. Imagine heating something up, and then dunking it in ice cold water. LOTS of stress on the materials occurs. That could lead to breaking too.
