sounds like a vacuum leak,, check vacuum lines from both valve covers for leaks or dry rot I just had this problem. My fix was simple. Remove the MAF sensor, get some electrical contact cleaner and clean the two wires/sensors. DO NOT TOUCH the wires or they may break. You may also have to purchase a anti-tamper star/hex set from advance auto parts (aprox $10) to remove the MAF sensor. This really works like a champ. Also, replacing the Idle Control Valve would not hurt as junk builds up in it.
It only allows starting the engine in park or neutral. It also is the reverse light switch.
Knocking is usually associated with worn main and rod bearings.

The neutral safety switch on a 2001 Ford Windstar is located on the transmission, typically mounted on the side of the transmission case. It is situated near the shift linkage and is responsible for preventing the engine from starting unless the transmission is in park or neutral. To access it, you may need to lift the vehicle and remove any necessary protective covers.
it prevents you from starting the engine while the transmission is in either DRIVE or REVERSE
Rev the engine slightly to see if it will keep running. If it does, then check for a possible vacuum leak. There could be a leak that gets worse when the transmission is shifted into gear.
Do you have a 3.8 engine for a 2001 Windstar Ford Van?
it is attached to the transmission and allows the engine to be started when the gear lever is in 'park' or 'neutral', but prevents the engine from being started in 'reverse' or 'drive'. on some cars the driver must also put their foot on the brake pedal before the engine can be started.
When we have this problem, we turn the ignition off and shift into neutral, restart the engine and it can then be shifted into drive or reverse.
There is no carburetor on a 2001 Ford Windstar engine because the engine is fuel injected
No. Propeller aircraft however can adjust their props to a neutral position, allowing for no forward or reverse thrust. Jet engine blades are fixed.
Engine idle too high.
