sounds like a vacuum leak,, check vacuum lines from both valve covers for leaks or dry rot I just had this problem. My fix was simple. Remove the MAF sensor, get some electrical contact cleaner and clean the two wires/sensors. DO NOT TOUCH the wires or they may break. You may also have to purchase a anti-tamper star/hex set from advance auto parts (aprox $10) to remove the MAF sensor. This really works like a champ. Also, replacing the Idle Control Valve would not hurt as junk builds up in it.

The neutral safety switch on a 2001 Ford Windstar is located on the transmission, typically mounted on the side of the transmission case. Rev the engine slightly to see if it will keep running. If it does, then check for a possible vacuum leak. There could be a leak that gets worse when the transmission is shifted into gear.
