Most likely in some cases 1) if the bolts that hold the transmission filter is loose and is sucking air instead of oil,
2) low in trans/oil
3) if has lots of miles possibility worn out seals and or bands (clutches),
other than that it might be loose or broken ( cable or linkage),
your pump is pumping oil through the system cause you have reverse.
all though Transmission oil pressure test will be need it.
IF you have ECU/ (Electronic Control Unit) that controls the transmission to, then you have to bring it in for diagnosis.
GOOD LUCK!!:-)

You need a new transmision, your gears are shot.

the actual transmission gears are worn. just hold the stick on reverse and do the same for first, cuz honestly, how long do you drive in 1st?? You could do that or if you have a bit more money, get it rebuilt or a new one......... or maybe your stick is loose and it's just slipping off the actual transmission gears are worn. just hold the stick on reverse and do the same for first, cuz honestly, how long do you drive in 1st?? Park Reverse Neutrual Drive I it's usually a one (1) and it stands for first gear Low
check your transmission fluid level. If it's low, then reverse goes out first. If that doesn't do it, you may need to take it to a transmission shop..
Well a couple different factors could be doing that. A couple questions? Does it jump or do you feel the engine jump when you put it from reverse to drive and vice versa? First thought would be MOTOR MOUNTS OR TRANNY MOUNTS. Check those or have a professional check them.
