They vary, but in essence most are about 3/4" to 1 1/4" in diameter, may have a stepped appearance that telescopes out abaout and inch or so and have a pigtail coming off of it or a connector that the wiring harness attaches to. Most autopart stores will have a picture of yours. Standard Ignition products has a picture guide.
The transmission temperature sensor on a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 is located on the driver's side of the transmission. It is just behind the bell housing. Look for a gold plug with a black plastic top.

This sounds like a 2000 model year or newer. There are as many as 12 difrent sensors mounted directly in or on the transmission. without detailed year, and option info as well as a particular sensor to look for no real answer can be given

The speed sensor is located on the transmission near the axle on the passenger side and lot of times the sensor gets corroded or the wires disconnect. If the wires and sensors look like they are in decent shape then most likely it is just a faulty sensor
Usually behind the grill, in front of the radiator or to either side of the radiator.
