Unfortunately it can mean the head gasket has failed. Specifically between the combustion chamber and the water jackets. The white smoke could be steam and the funny odour is actually the coolant being burned with the air, fuel mixture. Assuming its a petrol, then the coolant is being sucked in on the tickover. But the combustion gases are forced back into the cooling system when driving. Take off the cap SLOWLY and not when its hot and rev it a bit. If you see bubbles, its a gasket:( but if its a diesel, then it might be as simple as the injector pump being out of timing!:)
