on the 96 and newer cars and trucks. If the check engine light is on it will not pass emissions. they have a chip in the computer that will kick it out every time.there is a problem and if you take it to autozone they check it for free and give you a print-out telling you whats wrong. 2nd the hook-up for the scanner is under the dash. i hope i helped you with this problem Marvin C
