R-134a is used in all vehicles 1995 and later.
It came from the factory with R12 (Freon). As R12 is so very expensive, I would convert this car to R134a. You can buy a conversion kit at most auto parts stores. If you have leak, make sure to have the leak repaired.
A 97 Mercury Villager should use r134a type freon. The valve size is designed so that the r12 fittings cant accidentally be used.
The water pump does not have a "tensioner".
