The modern automobile is the application of internal combustion engines to the existing carriages, that had been drawn by horses. The precursor, steam engines, were generally too large to use for personal transportation.
The rise of gasoline and diesel engines made possible today's cars, trucks, and other vehicles. Other types of engines (such as small steam engines) did not prove as efficient to use. Until relatively recently, electric batteries were also not advanced enough to compete as automotive power sources.
