A 2-speed rear axle is usually used in medium to heavy duty trucks to obtain a little better fuel economy. Low- speed gives more power to initially start heavy loads. Hi- speed is used after vehicle is in motion. Low speed is as stated low speed, but hi power. Hi speed is higher speed but less power delivered to the drive wheels. I am not sure of the actual ratio numbers.
