The crossover is part of the housing that the water pump sits in. If you look at the engine from the drivers side the center of it is under the throttle body. It stretches across the engine over the transmission. It displaces coolant on either side of the engine. There are ports on each side.
waterpump or radiator hose
This answer is good for all Cadillac Northstar engines from 1993-2012.The part that the Water pump sits in is called the WATER CROSSOVER. This part allows the engine coolant to "crossover" from one cylinder head to the other. However it is a large casting that also goes between the throttle body and the intake manifold, mounts the EGR Valve, EVAP purge Valve and MAP sensor in addition to the water pump.Cadillac Man
Driver's side, front upper corner of the engine. It is driven by a small belt. The water pump requires a special tool to remove and install from housing.
In a housing that attaches to the water pump at the rear of the engine. Follow the top radiator hose down to the water outlet on the engine. The stat is in the water outlet. AT THE END OF THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE ( ENGINE END)
DO NOT FLUSH the coolant system on a northstar. Drain the coolant, replace with 50/50 Dexcool and fresh clean water, and you're good to go. Especially NEVER NEVER buy a "Coolant Flush" at a dealer or quicky-lube place. All you'll get is the previous sucker's engine gunk pumped in to your engine.
On the Northstar engine, the water pump is on the RIGHT side of the engine (looking at it from the front. If you look from the left (Drivers) side fender, it's right in front of you- You'll see the water pump drive belt running off the forward camshaft.
Right off the water pump, upper hose, right side of engine (from the front)
If it is smoking white smoke, it is getting in the engine and the engine is burning it. If not, it is leaking somewhere. Sometimes you hve to check it when it is cold as it seals off when it gets hot. GoodluckJoe
The Cadillac Northstar 32V engine can overheat due to several factors, including a malfunctioning cooling system, such as a clogged radiator, a failing water pump, or a damaged thermostat. Additionally, low coolant levels or coolant leaks can lead to inadequate cooling. Other potential causes include engine oil leaks, which can cause the engine to run hotter, and issues with the engine's electronic controls that affect performance. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to prevent overheating.
how do I remove a water pump on a 1990 4.5 liter cadillac engine
The water pump housing is the bottom radeator hose on the right side of the engine. You will need the GM water pump remover tool, you can rent one from Auto Zone or a similar store. remove the hose and the outer-caseing, the waterpump is now slightly visable. Use a .5 inch rachet with the GM tool and turn clockwise.
The water pump for a 1998 Cadillac catera should be on the front of the engine. It is located near the center.
