That's your overdrive button ( the top " gear " of your automatic transmission ) If the overdrive is switched off the O/D OFF light will be illuminated in your gauge cluster Overdrive is the normally allowed position , it is used on the highway / freeway and allows the engine to run at a lower RPM ( Revolutions Per Minute ) when the vehicle speed is faster , it helps you get better gas mileage and the transmission will run cooler
14 mpg
if it is a tilt wheel,be sure the overdrive cancel button wiring on the shifter isn't chafing on the steering column.remove the ignition switch and the 3 screws securing tie column cover and check for chafing.
There is a switch to shut off the overdrive if you wish On the column shift the switch is on the end of the gear selector lever On the automatic floor shift the switch ( button ) is just to the right of the shifter The next time the truck is shut off and then restarted the overdrive is normally allowed
Mounted on top and inside the fuel tank.

There is a little plastic ring at the end of the shifter, unless it has already fallen off, as they like to do. Pop off the ring and grab the button with a pair of pliers and pull it straight out. It is simply plugged in.
The speed sensor is mounted in the top of the rear differential on a 1999 F150. Remove the wires, then unbolt the sensor to remove it.
For that model year, the automatic transmission had four speeds (although I believe they stopped putting the 'Overdrive' decal on their vehicles by that point, as it was standard), and the manual transmission was five speed.
