Both the cooler and heat exchanger perform the same function as they remove heat from the engine. Two popular types of coolers are air-to-air inter-coolers that allow air to flow over fins and air-to-water models. The heat exchanger is often mounted in front of the radiator and uses airflow to reduce water temperature.

If there are lines coming from the transmission to the radiator, it has a cooler in the radiator. If there are lines from the transmission to an external heat exchanger, that would be an auxiliary cooler.
An air heat exchanger works by passing two air streams close to each other without mixing them. Heat from the warmer air stream transfers to the cooler air stream through the walls of the exchanger. An EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Cooler is a heat exchanger installed in the EGR circuit. The EGR system recirculates exhaust back to the engine in order to reduce NOX (Nitrous Oxide) emissions. The cooler simply cools the exhaust gas prior to gas being reintroduced into the engine. By cooling the gas the combustion temperature is reduced and NOX also as NOX is formed at higher temperatures. Coolers will vary in size depending on the engine size and the emission standard the engine must comply with.
