All IROC-Z's were relatively close to each other as far as top speed goes. Your looking somewhere around 145-150 MPH with the exception for the Throttle Body 305's which were governed at 115 MPH for insurance reasons. The best years for all around performance would be 88-90 IROC-Z's with the 350 TPI or the Manual trans 305's. most irocs came with a 5.7 litre tuneport motor...a few with the 5.0 litre 305. my experience has shown the 5.0 to be faster... dont have a documented answer other than, when it was introduced in 84 as the high output 5.0 it was to compete with the mustang who had been stomping the z-28 foer a few years by then. being an avid camaro fan i was happy to see it...why not a 5.7 i dont know. i myself have owned 22 camaros and 3 of them were 5.0 ho cars...2 auto's and 1 5 speed. they would run real good just by letting them breath. they were the g.m. vacuume hose nightmare motors, with a 700 cfm quadrajet that did a good job of sucking in the middle of the hood if you removed the secondary progression rod. my 84 with the 5 spd. stomep my bud's 88 tuneprt iroc...

It was just an incorporation of the "Z" in Z-28. IROC stood for International Race Of Champions.....from the Nascar IROC races.
