A 351 Ford V8 firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
The 351 Cleveland firing order is ( 1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8 ) The distributor rotor turns counterclockwise
They didn't come that way, but, sometimes people swap out the 289 cam with a 351 cam and that gives the car the same firing order as a 351. I've never been real sure why people do that, since it doesn't improve anything, but, occassionaly you will find a 289 that someone has done that to.
Firing order is different 1992 to 1995 h.o have 351 firing order
The correct firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, but, sometimes people swap out the camshaft for a 351 Cleveland cam which has the firing order of 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Using a 1969 Ford Mustang or a 1969 Mercury Cougar with the 351 cubic inch / 5.8 litre V8 as examples : ( Motorcraft FL-1-A engine oil filter )
From the factory , the 1969 Ford Mustang was available with the 429 cubic inch V8 ( also the 428 / 390 / 351 / 302 cubic inch V8 engines )

early for 289 302 windsor firing order was changed to the later 351 windsor firing order to smooth out the firing of cylinders. The early 289 firing order made cams sound lumpy and could cause extra stress on crankshafts when engines were used in motorsport at high rpm
the firing order is the same on both engines but the timing is different
