The term "El Camino" translates to "The Way" in Spanish, and it often refers to routes that have historical significance, particularly in relation to pilgrimage or travel. One of the most famous roads named El Camino is the Camino de Santiago, which leads to the shrine of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This pilgrimage route has been traveled for centuries, attracting pilgrims seeking spiritual fulfillment. The name reflects both the journey and the cultural heritage associated with these paths.
!Hola! El Camino de Santiago is the Way of Saint James pilgrimage walk, traditionally beginning from St. Jean Pied de Port in south-western France, and finishing in the Spanish Galician city of Santiago de Compostela. I have walked the Camino twice and you may find my non-profit blog useful as I kept a blog post for every day of my 3,109km Camino earlier this year from Prague to Santiago de Compostela/Finisterre: mycaminosantiago.com Gracias a buen camino!

The El Camino is very real and is still in use. Today the California highway system follows the original route and has placed mission bells all along the route to let people know they are on the El Camino. The route was the one used between the 21 missions system in California. All the missions were a days ride from each other.
el Camino de Santiago is not one trail but many different routes (about 8 official routes in France, 15 in Spain and many that start in other European countries) so there is no 'start' only a destinaton - the tomb of St James in Santiago de Compostela. One could say that el Camino starts from your front door! In order to earn a certificate of completion - the Compostela - you need to walk the last 100km to Santiago or cycle the last 200km. That is the only criterion for earning the Compostela. You don't have to stay in pilgrim shelters, or carry a backpack Spain
