Overdrive is a gearing mechanism of a motor vehicle transmission that reduces the power output required to maintain a speed in a specific range by lowering the gear ratio. You can have overdrive on a 3, 4, or 5 speed A/T. It is an added gear ratio that is higher than the normal high gear. Used mainly for highway cruising on flat terrain.
