In a 1969 Mustang , 302 with 2 barrel carburetor , the point gap is ( .017 with
automatic transmission ) and ( .021 with manual transmission )
There was only a visible cam sensor on '98-2001 Explorer 302's. If you have a distributor, your cam sensor is in the distributor. If you don't have a distributor, it is where the distributor used to be on the front of the intake manifold.
Only if you change the drive gear. The gear is different on the 289/302/351W distributor. Outside of that it will work.

absolutely not the 302 is in the front and the 460 is in the rear
To hook up the distributor for a 302 motor, first ensure the engine is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke for cylinder number one. Align the rotor of the distributor to point towards the number one cylinder terminal on the distributor cap. Insert the distributor into the engine, making sure the gear meshes with the oil pump drive. Finally, connect the ignition wires to the corresponding terminals in the correct firing order, typically 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 for a 302.

302 it goes toward the back of the engine-----point it at the driver.

First of all, a 1979 Ford 302 should have electronic ignition if it's original. If you have a point distributor in there, it's been changed because someone didn't want to deal with the temperamental early electronics (I've done this myself !). The gap should be .017 (seventeen thousandths).
The distributor rotor turns COUNTERCLOCKWISE
Assuming you have set the engine to #1 TDC and marked the position of the distributor and the position of the rotor, remove the distributor hold-down clamp and it's bolt, then pull the distributor up and out.
