I have towed over 8,000 pounds with mine. I have a 1996 cheyenne with the 5.7 and 4.10 gears front and rear. but the 8,000 really didnt strain the motor too hard. but Chevy only rates it to pull roughly 7500.

Get a heavier duty rearend. the tow capacity is based on the rearend. Chevy 10, 12, and 14 bolt rearend.
