Per the 1998 Chevy C1500 manual... The 5.7L can do 5000 - 7000 depending on the axle ratio.

3.08 - 5000lbs

3.42 - 6000lbs

3.73 - 7000lbs

It also requires an oil cooler for more than 2000lbs and heavy duty shocks for over 5000lbs. The 4.3L auto can do 4000 (3.08) or 5000 (3.42).

The 4.3L manual can do 2000 (3.08), 2500 (3.42), 3000 (3.73). The 5.0 auto does 500 lbs less than the 5.7l at the same ratios while the manual is almost identical to the 4.3l manual's capacities.
