The Ford recommended mileage for replacing the timing belt is 120,000 miles, for the 2000 Focus. I doubt that the engine changed much, if any, between 2000 and 2001.
I assume you mean it is getting bad gas mileage. Get it looked at, it sounds like it needs a tune up and the fluids/filters changed.
