There is nothing truly unique about Ford cars and trucks, but in my experience, they are easier to work on than most other makes. Many of the repairs and engine modifications can be done at home without many headaches, and the parts for the most part are actually less costly and the parts from one engine are more compatible with another. For example, on older ford rangers equiped with a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder, you improvise using the starter from a 5.0 V8 mustang. Often times, the transmission, rearend, radiator, suspension, interior, and wiring, would interchange quite easily. Most other automakers made the parts more specific and heavy mocification would be needed to interchange the parts. Ford wanted to keep thing's mostly simple, and catered to the public when they said they wanted to be able to make there own repairs at home. Times have changed though and thing's aren't so black and white. Now people are pretty much forced to see a shop or drop off there vehicle at the dealer for even the simplest problems, this is where the thing that makes ford so unique, becomes less visible. I am a fan of many different automakers though, and it's really best to be kinda open minded. If you go and buy a new car, it's impossible to tell how long it's gonna last, this is mostly all new and untested technology being used. It's best really to look at the safety, cost of maintence, warranty (because unless you have an OBD 1 and 2 scan tool and all the right equipment, your gonna have to send your baby off for repairs.) It's also best to find an automobile that has the most universal parts compatilibily. I personally drive a 1997 Chevy S10 with 2.2 liter 4 cylinder, there are thousands of vehicles on the roads I could trade parts with to keep going. This all mostly just my perspective, but I feel strongly about it. I hope my opinion has been of value to you.
