It depends on the smell. Generally, the exhaust has no real odor to it if everything is working right. A "rotten egg" smell is a sign of too much fuel entering the catalytic converter (which will eventually ruin it). A "sweet" smell indicates coolant leaking into the combustion chamber and then into the exhaust. It also depends on the year of the car...newer cars have to meet ever higher emissions standards, and the telltale "smoke" that we used to use to help us diagnosis problems is no longer making it out of the tailpipe.
