this could be due to a multitude of possibilities, check engine light is controlled by the pcm (computer). the pcm gathers information from multiple sensors located in or around the engine compartment,and exhaust and fuel system.
suggest take vehicle some where to be scanned. there are some stores that offer this done at no charge.problem is even when scanned suspected circuit should be checked manually which requires at time some skill and knowledge of the electrical system. which of course is why their are ASE technitions

I was looking at the 2001 Ford Windstar Owner Guide and the warning light : above the tachometer is the check fuel cap light below the engine temperature gauge in the middle is the bulb warning light , one of the exterior bulbs has burned out
Turn on the ignition and do not start the engine. The light will come on unless the bulb is burnt out or someone has removed it.
