In almost all cases the number one cylinder is the one closest to the front of the engine. In other words where the fan belt or serpentine belts are is the front. This is true even on a V6 or V8. If you look closely you will see that even though they look like they are even one of the valve covers is slightly farther forward than the other side. That is number 1.
