If you're not the original owner of the car, I'd recommend you have a refrigerant purity test performed at a shop. A 1990 would have used R-12 - however, many R-12 systems were later retrofitted to R-134a, and this cannot be determined by visual inspection - they usually retained the R-12 schrader valves, even after conversion to R-134a.
