A tractor (usually fuelled by diesel) is the modern replacement for the shire horses that were once used in farming. A tractor, using many attachments available, is able to do in hours what once took horses several days to complete.
The use of a four-wheel tractor is no different from any other tractor: to operate and pull machinery as a means to "work" the fields.

I have read that the Sienna AWD system uses an open differential for the central differential (and I presume the front and rear as well) and relies on four wheel traction control to prevent wheel spin. It is always engaged.
It's actually four wheel drive, but uses a transverse engine with a transaxle... it's basically a front wheel drive vehicle plus a transfer case.
