If your talking about a gasoline powered car... An automobile powered by a 4-stroke gasoline engine was built in Mannheim, Germany by Karl Benz in 1885 and granted a patant in January of the following year under the auspices of his major company, Benz & Cie., which was founded in 1883. He began to sell his production vehicles in 1888.

True, but this was the first PRODUCTION car- the first petrol-driven car to receive major publicity was built by Gottlieb Daimler ten years earlier, and various individual engineers had been experimenting with internal combustion engines installed in vehicles for decades before this.

Steam-driven road vehicles were around from the late 18th Century, and various inventors had designed plans for cars of one sort or another for Centuries- Leonardo da vinci published designs for cars driven by pedal-power, pulley or clockwork. The first internal combustion engine was produced in 1680 and used gunpowder as fuel!
