I have my own 1988 Gmc Sierra 1500, and I had the same exact problem. What worked for me was Wrestling the fuel filter off and replacing it and then putting techron into the gas tank for two fill-ups. That helped ALOT but I also replaced my distributor cap, rotor, and ignition wires and it solved the problem for good.
Hope this helps!
Dirty air filter is the first thing I'd check.
Could be a few things, I would check universal joints first. Also check driveshaft for damage.

Try a basic tune up. New spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. When the vehicle is in first gear and you are accelerating, that is when the most load is on the engine. It sounds as though under a load, you are losing your spark because it is arcing out where it should not be.

I'd check the CV joints first.
