A Cavalier can sputter do to a number of things. Cars sputter due to bad spark plugs, bad compression, broken engine mounts, or even a failing catalytic converter.

Check the spark plug and the plug wire. If that isn't the problem then check compression. You could also have a bad fuel injector.
Too much dielectric grease on the plug boot, or they are worn out and need replacing.
