Automatic transmissions are complex components with hundreds of soft, hard, and electronic parts. Diagnosing your transmission issue is based on symptoms, road tests, inspection of the vehicle and or running diagnostic for OBDII error codes. Causes of problems can range from the need for new fluid, to indications an overhaul/rebuild/replacement may be soon required.

The 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix typically requires about 12 quarts of automatic transmission fluid for a complete transmission fluid change, which includes both the transmission and the torque converter. However, for a fluid change without a complete flush, you may need around 4 to 6 quarts. Always refer to the owner's manual for the most accurate specifications.
