there i own a 2002 4 wheel drive xlt escape and i had this problem. I replaced the battery and that fixed the problem but my fuel pump is about go dead soon as well so i would look into both of those things. .....I also own an 2002 and had the same problem and it was the IAC valve. it was clogged with carbon and after removing it and spraying some throttle and choke cleaner inside it worked fine and the car started and the the idle returned instead of dying....you can buy an updated iAC VALVE REPLACEMENT that doesn't have the spring but a diaphragm that operates better in the carbon rich environment
could be a vacuum leak, or throttle positioning sensor
