On a 17 year old vehicle I would suspect a vacuum leak. Replace all under-hood vacuum hoses. Also make sure the brake booster is not leaking. This is a relatively inexpensive repair. Replace the hoses one at a time as to not get confused. An intake manifold leak can also cause the same symptoms. Of course the plugs and plug wires are suspect.
