That is a good question. There is a lot of history with the Impala, and the big block.

First off, you have to remember that the 348/409, were considered big blocks. That would have been 58, or 59.

In 1962, Chevy made a race version of the Impala, called the Z11. It had aluminum front fenders, hood, trunk lid, bumpers, and verious other weight saving options, like no radio, no heater, no wipers, ect. It had what was called the "mystery motor." An all aluminum, 427. It went in the 11's, right ouyt of the box. Racers like Hayden-Proffit, and Bill Jenkins, cleaned up in superstock eliminater, with those cars. It had a sticker on the dash that stated that the car was not intended for street use. They made 51, as to be a production model, over 50 had to be made, and offered to the public, to be considered "stock." Most were crushed, however, I remember one made it to our local track around 1969, and I got to see it run. What a car.

Since then the Impala has always had bigger motors available, as it is a bigger car. It was the first Chevy to come with a bigblock, and the only, for a while.
