The timing can vary anywhere from 6 degrees BTDC to 10 degrees BTDC , depending on the year , manual or automatic transmission , California equipped etc What year is your vehicle ?
The timing marks on a 1969 Ford 360 should line up between the timing chain and the cam sprocket. This sets the initial timing which can later be adjusted using a timing light.
how to set timing on ford 1987 f-100 302 without timing light

hey i have a 73 ranchero 400ci and just set the timing at 6 degrees advance.
The timing is set by timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. Using a timing light the light will sync with the engine and show if the marks line up properly. To adjust the timing the distributor is turned slightly. There is a clam and bolt under the distributor, loosen these just a bit to be able to move the distributor.
Connect timing light to battery and No. 1 cylinder and aim light at crankshaft Connect timing light to battery and No. 1 cylinder and aim light at crankshaft timing marks
In order to advance the timing on a 97 Ford Aspire, a person will need a timing light, wrench, wheel chocks, and jump cables. A person needs to be careful not to damage the engine when adjusting the timing.
Connect timing light in series with No. 1 spark plug Connect timing light to battery Remove vacuum line to vacuum advance unit on distributor Mark timing marks on crankshaft and stationary Loosed distribtor hold down slightly Start vehicle and move distributor slight to align timing marks
8 to 9 degrees with a timing light with vacuum advance hooked up,
There is an inline spout connector, kind of like a plug you would plug into the wall, that you have to disconnect before using timing light. This puts the engine in base timing. Set timing to specs and then plug inline spout connector back up.
To set the timing on a 1996 Ford Festiva, first, ensure the engine is at operating temperature and then turn off the engine. Locate the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley and the timing pointer on the engine block. Using a timing light, connect it to the number one spark plug wire and start the engine. Adjust the distributor until the timing mark aligns with the specified degree (usually around 10 degrees BTDC) on the timing scale, then tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
if you look near the center bolt on your main pulley attached to the crank you will find a small arrow, use a white paint pen to mark it so it is visible, hook up your timing light and time using the timing marks attached to your engine block
