Your owner's manual should tell you, but I think in neutral & Xfer case in neutral also. The don't forget to put the key in & unlock the ignition so the wheels are not locked or it will track very nasty & the tires will squeal a lot.

It depends on the vehicle. Some vehicles can not be towed with all 4 wheels moving without damaging the transmission. It should be stated in the owner's manual.
For flat towing, this should only be done if the driveshaft is removed.

For emergency towing of a mile or so in neutral you should be ok. If you are towing it any farther than that, you really need to remove the driveshafts to prevent catastophic damage to the transmission and gear box.
Can it be done? Sure. Should it be done? Absolutely not - you'll destroy your transmission, and flat towing a front-wheel drive vehicle is never a recommended practice, even with a manual transmission.
